Driver Austin Sorrie slid Esquire off the pegs passing the half and charged to the front in the stretch to score in the $10,000 Preferred 3 Trot at Flamboro Downs on Saturday (March 20).
Away fifth to a :28.3 first quarter, Sorrie kept Esquire put before pulling first over to a :58.3 qualifier while odds-on favourite Katch Kanna set the tempo. Esquire loomed closer and caught cover from a pylon-popping Moana to three-quarters in 1:28, and soon sprung off his cover’s helmet when straightening for the finish. Katch Kanna continued to hold the lead in the stretch but failed to withstand Esquire’s late charge, with the eight-year-old Kadabra gelding landing a half length in front at the beam to win in 1:58.3. Moana finished third.
Owned by Brandon Guerra, Esquire won his 18th race from 83 starts, earning $179,536. Mark Goddard trains the $6.50 winner.
