Brigus and driver Scott Coulter stole the spotlight on the Sunday, March 2 evening program at Flamboro Downs, scoring an upset victory in the $9,500 featured pace.
Magical Aoine (Sam Fillion) surged to the front early, but the lead was short-lived as heavy 1-5 favourite Darrell (Travis Henry) quickly reclaimed control, posting fractions of :28 to the quarter and :58.1 to the half. Adriatico Hanover (Jason Ryan) advanced first over, and Brigus tracked his cover. As the field reached three-quarters in 1:27.2, Adriatico Hanover edged past Darrell to briefly take the lead, with Brigus looming close behind. A fierce stretch battle ensued, but Brigus had more in the tank, surging ahead to win in 1:56.2 by 2-1/4 lengths. Adriatico Hanover held second, while World Revival (Anthony Haughan) powered home to claim third.
Trained by Ken Oliver for owner Milton Young of Paradise, N.L., Brigus is a four-year-old Betterthancheddar-Bachata Hanover gelding who notched his sixth career victory with this upset win. The triumph boosted his lifetime earnings to $49,865, while those who backed him at the windows were rewarded with a $14.40 payout.
