For P L Jill, winning Monday’s $36,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park was like shooting fish in a barrel for 'Team Baillargeon.'
Reinsman Mario Baillargeon used the mare’s great gait speed to get her involved early, and she simply powered away from the competition in the late stages of the mile.
P L Jill, who was sent off as the 2-1 favourite in the six-horse affair, swept to the lead after battling with stablemate R First Class to the quarter pole in :27. P L Jill worked to the top and then threw down middle panels of :56.1 and 1:24.3 before using a :28.3 closing panel to win by 5-3/4 lengths over B Yoyo in 1:53.1. On The Ropes rallied from last to finish third.
Ben Baillargeon trains the seven-year-old daughter of Kadabra-Fridays Gem for Prince Lee Acres, Jill Coleman and Alan Christensen. The homebred now owns a 3-1-1 record from seven starts this season. The 27-time winner is quickly closing in on $500,000 in lifetime earnings.
