Ever make a wild future wager knowing full well that it will never come in? Ever felt the rush of seeing one gain steam before it falls short? A horse racing groom placed a longshot 'accumulator' bet on five of his pupils this past December, and he must have felt a rush this past week when he found himself $1.6-million richer
.
According to a report on ottawacitizen.com, Conor Murphy, a groom to United Kingdom-based trainer Nicky Henderson, made a £50 bet on Sprinter Sacre, Simonsig, Bobs Worth, Finians Rainbow and Riverside Theatre to all win their respective races at the Cheltenham Horse Racing Festival.
At the time Murphy constructed the ticket, the odds of the bet were 259,895-1. The win has netted Murphy £1-million.
The piece on ottawacitizen.com has quoted Henderson as saying, "It's absolutely wonderful. He (Murphy) is the nicest, kindest, gentlest man.
"He's obviously got more confidence in me than I have and he obviously took a rather strong view, before Christmas, I gather."
