Acefortyfour Lilly, fourth at the top of the stretch, soared home to capture the $8,300 featured optional-claiming pace for fillies and mares on Wednesday, March 18 at The Raceway at the Western Fair District.
The mare sat fifth behind a barrage of early action, with Rosie Beach (Mike Horner) landing on the lead first before yielding to Brydown Wait N See (Paul MacKenzie), who was then passed by odds-on favourite Woodmere Ohdoya (Robert Doyle) past the quarter in :29.3. Lorne House guided Acefortyfour Lilly out onto the back of Vivs Freight Train (Tyler Borth) to race second-over through middle fractions of 1:00.2 and 1:29.2.
Acefortyfour Lilly tipped three-high with the top four all in contention coming off the final turn, and the daughter of Dali-Stonedust Cammy rolled down the outside to catch Woodmere Ohdoya by a head for the 1:59 score. Vivs Freight Train held on for third over Brydown Wait N See.
Acefortyfour Lilly has won both starts this season for trainer Ryan Steward after going 0-for-15 as a four-year-old rookie last year. She has now earned $25,552 for Kodie Carther of Acton, Ont. She paid $12.40 to win.
