This past weekend, breeder and Standardbred Canada director Carmen Perzow discussed the plight of Quebec's harness racing industry with the CTV affiliate
in Montreal.
In an interview with CTV's Tarah Schwartz, Perzow talked about how the Quebec government has yet to make a decision on who it would help - Attractions Hippiques or the horse industry.
"As it is now, breeders like me have three generations of horses on the ground - we have those born in 2007 that were supposed to race in 2009, those born last year that were supposed to be at an auction this year that we haven't heard about, and those born right now."
Perzow related the cost of owning these horses, "It costs $10 per day just for food - that's a horse that's not even in training. A lot of Quebec-based horse owners have to get rid of their horses because they can't get on the track."
When asked what would she wanted to see happen, Perzow pulled no punches.
"What I want the government to do is take back this industry, put it back as offer to tender, and get some competent people to run the industry."
