Blue Monster turned a two-hole trip into a $30,000 payday thanks to her 8-1 upset in the $60,000 final of the Silver Reign Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack
on Monday evening. Scott Zeron mapped out the winning trip for the three-year-old daughter of Camluck-Blue Hour, who went winless in her first two starts of the 2011 campaign for trainer Merv Chupp.
Blue Monster and Zeron rushed to the early lead, and they had five fillies lined up behind them at the quarter pole in :28.2. Lady Kelleigh Anne, who was sent off as the 4-5 favourite, was on the leader’s back past that post before launching an attack at the mid-way point of the first turn.
Lady Kelleigh Anne splashed her way across the backstretch and had the field at her mercy at the mid-way point in :58.3. She continued on the lead into the final turn, but halfway around the turn she came under attack from Blue Monster, who was looking racy while sitting in the hole. Lady Kelleigh Anne held a narrow lead at the three-quarter pole in 1:27.4, but she was hauled down in deep stretch by Blue Monster who kicked home in a :28-second clip to post the head decision in 1:56. Lady Kelleigh Anne was a determined runner-up, while Favorite Fantasy finished a well-beaten third.
Blue Monster, who went 2-for-16 in he rookie campaign, is owned by the partnership of Chupp Racing Stable Inc of Cambridge, ON and Bruce Hejl of Saint John, IN. The lion’s share of the purse bumped her lifetime bankroll to $51,675.
It turned out to be an awesome night for driver Scott Zeron, who finished the 12-race program with five trips to the winner's circle. In addition to Blue Monster's score in the final of the Silver Reign Stakes, he also clicked with Windsun Montecarlo (1:56), Road Untraveled (1:55.4), Native Canadian (1:54.3) and As Tears Go By (1:58).
