When the most recent discussion of harness racing's future in Ontario took place with Ontario Horse Racing's John Snobelen, one track that wasn't mentioned was Kawartha Downs. The speculation was that Kawartha would not host live racing in 2014, but don't count out racing in Peterborough County just yet.
In a recent Trot Radio interview with Peterborough-area horseman John Bax, he gave indication that discussions are indeed ongoing with hopes to host racing at Kawartha in 2014 with possibly the same amount of dates as last year.
Trot Insider confirmed that Kawartha is still a possibility for 2014 with Ontario Racing Commission Chair Elmer Buchanan, who stated that Kawartha is "very much in the mix" and was hopeful there would be some sort of "positive announcement" prior to April 1, 2014.
In 2013, Kawartha Downs was saved by an eleventh-hour deal announced the night before they were set to close for the season. In January, the ORC redirected purse monies from Kawartha to the province's Standardbred Horsepeople’s Trust Account as the track didn't apply for a 2014 live racing license at that time.
