Bonito Boy and driver Ed Hensley rallied from the backfield before splitting rivals late to deliver a 14-1 upset in the $22,000 conditioned trotting feature that highlighted the 10-race Monday, Feb. 9 card at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
In a scratched down field of six that were non-winners of three of $55,000 (Ontario-sired $75,000) lifetime, Bonito Boy left from the rail and floated away in the fifth position while 7-5 favourite Radcliffe (James MacDonald) laid down the opening quarter in :28.1. Luvutothemoonanbak (Doug McNair) passed on a tuck on the first turn, blitzing to the lead on the backstretch to assume command before reaching the half in :58. Bonito Boy tipped off the cones on the far turn, finding the cover of Jayport Cash (Daryl Thiessen) to be fourth at three-quarters while Luvutothemoonanbak reached that station in 1:28.
Jayport Cash began to drift wide as he chased Luvutothemoonanbak, leaving the door open for Bonito Boy to make it a three-across battle to the wire in deep stretch. Trotting home in :28.2, Bonito Boy stormed between rivals late to reach the wire first in 1:57 and a half-length in front of Jayport Cash, with Luvutothemoonanbak a length back in third.
Ed Hensley also co-owns and bred Bonito Boy along with trainer Ashleigh Hensley, both of Dundas, Ont. The six-year-old son of Trixton-Escuela has won two of his six starts in 2026, pushing his career bankroll to $62,595 after establishing a new lifetime mark. Bonito Boy returned $30.10 to win at the betting windows.
Also featured on the Monday program was the first leg of a Pop-Up Series for $20,000 claimers who were non-winners of $30,000 lifetime. The first split went to All Bets On Gary (Louis-Philippe Roy, $3.20) in 1:56.2 for trainer Jean-Francois Maguire, with the second going to Bettor Beast (Doug McNair, $4.80) in 1:56 for trainer Kyle Fellows.
