Radio Host Makes Race-Calling Debut

Kent Chambers, Afternoon Drive Host on Jewel 92.1, was Flamboro Downs' latest Announcer Idol contestant on Sunday as he stepped up to the mic to call the evening's third race.

With a set of binoculars and the assistance of track announcer Gary Guy, Chambers learned the lingo of harness racing as Little Clayt and driver Simon Allard went wire-to-wire in 2:01.1 in snowy weather conditions.

"Little Clayt out front by a length," called Chambers as the $10,000 claiming pacers headed into the final stretch and Breewood Bayou launched a late attack from the two-hole. "Oh, Breewood Bayou is turning it on though on the outside! Little Clayt still on the inside holding. Breewood Bayou is chasing. Little Clayt, Little Clayt...and Little Clayt is the winner!"

The three-year-old How Fleet He Is colt prevailed by a quarter-length for trainer John Kennedy and owner Alison Kennedy.

"Wow, was that exciting! Thank you very much for having me, it was fun," Chambers concluded after his race-calling debut.

In its second year, Announcer Idol features local media personalities as guest announcers each Sunday night through March 22. Fans will have the chance to vote for their favourite race calls from the competition and the winner will receive a donation to the charity of their choice.

Making his second Announcer Idol appearance, last year's contestant Jason Portuondo of CHCH Sports will return to Flamboro Downs next Sunday to call the evening's third race.

Later on the card, the evening's $7,000 Preferred 3 Pace was won by the class-dropping Mach Pride, who went gate-to-wire in 1:57.4 with J.R. Plante in the sulky. The five-year-old son of Mach Three is trained by Louie Eftimiadis for owners Michael Virdiramo, Sheldon Rose, Randy Zhok and Lou Green. Astute and Hidden Potential completed the top three in the compact field of five that had two scratches.
