The Michigan Harness Horsemen’s Association is urging its members and other horsemen not to sign the 'Racing to Save Michigan' petition circulating at Sports Creek
Raceway.
The petition calls for a vote on the November ballot that would allow slots at Michigan’s five tracks, but would tax the racinos at 22.5%, compared to the 8.3% rate for three existing Detroit casinos and 3% for 23 tribal casinos in the state.
MHHA president Brett Boyd called this “a scary time,” pointing out that the original draft of the proposal contains no protections for live racing and no specific percentages for horse racing.
He said the horsemen’s association is working to get the matter worked out, and an initial meeting was scheduled for last Friday with Dan Adkins of Hazel Park, on revenue sharing.
