V Squared will look to complete a sweep of the Don Mills Trotting Series on Sunday afternoon at Woodbine Racetrack, but will have to overcome the
difficult Post 9 in the $60,000 final to do so.
That post was no obstacle for the four-year-old gelded son of Pegasus Spur in the first leg of the series when he upset at odds of 7-1 for owner-driver Scott Zeron. He came right back to win last week and position himself for a series’ sweep on Sunday.
“I think he’s coming into the race in the best shape he’s been in,” Zeron said from his home on Friday afternoon. “He wasn’t quick of the gate last week from inside, but the week before he left really well from the nine hole, so I don’t think that will be a huge problem on Sunday. I don’t see getting away 10th as the winning move, that’s for sure.”
Zeron first sat behind the horse on September 23 of last summer during Jugette Day at the Delaware County Fair Grounds in Ohio. The pair teamed up to win a $23,817 division of the Ohio Breeders Championships by almost six lengths in 1:58.4. It was one of 13 trips to the winner’s circle last season for V Squared.
“I was asked to come down by Scott Robinson to drive him that day and just fell in love with him,” Zeron recalled. “He was flawlessly gaited and won so easily. The owners decided to send him up here and we ended up buying a piece of him. He’s just a horse that loves to win and it shows.”
The trotter, who is now conditioned by Scott’s father, Rick, has been installed as the 9-2 fourth choice on the morning line for the Sunday tilt. The 3-1 early favourite is Lexis Amigo, who will start just inside of V Square from Post 8 and is coming off a 1:55.4 tally in last week’s second leg.
On a personal note, Zeron is coming off an outstanding 2009 season where he reined home 268 winners while notching $2,138,974 in purses in just his second full season of driving. He is off to a flying start this season with close to 40 wins and $250,000 in earnings through the first full month of racing.
“Last season was just phenomenal,” he said. “I set a goal of 200 wins and $2 million and exceeded both of them, so I couldn’t ask for anything more. I’d like to do more driving at Woodbine and Mohawk this year if I get the chance, but I’m happy to keep getting the opportunities and experience at the other tracks, too.”
First post on Sunday afternoon is 1:20 p.m. and the final of the Don Mills Trotting Series is slated as Race 8 on the program.
