As a follow up to the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency (CPMA) announcement regarding testing for anabolic steroids, the Ontario Racing Commission
(ORC) advises all Ontario racing industry licensees that post race positive tests for veterinary approved as well as non-approved anabolic steroids will be treated as a Class III Drug.

On February 2, 2009, the CPMA issued a Memorandum to the Canadian racing industry announcing its plan to implement testing for veterinary approved anabolic steroids: boldenone, nandrolone, stanozolol and testosterone, as of June 1, 2009. Any graded stakes races occurring before that date will be tested for anabolic steroids. The memorandum also notes that testing for non-veterinary-approved anabolics is currently in place.

The ORC consulted with the CPMA and its own medication control advisors and determined that the Class III level for anabolic steroids was appropriate.
The ORC believes it is the responsibility of Ontario licensees to pay close attention to, and closely review, all memos from the CPMA. This includes keeping up to date on the CPMA Schedule of Prohibited Drugs.
