Scene A Magician made an appearance in the winner's circle for the second week in a row at The Raceway at Western Fair District after taking the featured $13,000 Preferred Handicap Trot on Friday night (Jan. 4).
Driver Garrett Rooney and Scene A Magician retook command after the 3-5 favoured mare Power And Grace (Brett MacDonald) made an early appearance on the front and led through fractions of :29.2, 1:01.1 and 1:31.1. He kept the first-over Goaltender (Samuel Fillion) at bay then prevailed over the wide-rallying Jayport Hi Class (Greg Dustin) and the pylon-skimming Power And Grace in 2:01.2 over the 'good' track.
Fresh off a victory in a Preferred event contested over the added distance of 1-1/16 miles last week, Scene A Magician returned $9.10 to win as the 7-2 second choice.
Owned and trained by Jennifer Pinkerton, the eight-year-old gelded son of Daylon Magician now has a pair of wins and two second from his first five starts this year. Lifetime, he has won 22 races while banking $277,691 in purses.
Katch Kanna later played a game of 'catch me if you can' in the $10,000 Preferred 3 Trot and held off his rivals at the end to double up at The Raceway for driver Travis Henry and trainer Jacques Dupont.
Katch Kanna carved out panels of :30, 1:01.1 and 1:31.2 before prevailing by a neck over outside rivals Azucar (Marc St. Louis Jr.) and Sorprese (Mark Goddard). He paid $4.70 to win as the 6-5 second choice in the field that was scratched down to five.
The nine-year-old Lucky Chucky gelding, who is now three-for-four this year, is owned by Les Ecuries Dorleans Inc. of Sainte-Julie, Que., and Sylvain Descheneaux of Sorel-Tracy, Que. The victory was his 32nd lifetime and lifted his bankroll to $255,159.
