According to a report, Penn National Gaming, which has just purchased Rosecroft Raceway, could be selling its 49 per cent interest in the Maryland Jockey Club, operator of both Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course.
An article by The Baltimore Sun explains that Penn National officials are urging their MJC partners to halt their legal actions into the bidding process which saw the slots license for Arundel Mills County go to the Cordish Group.
Penn National spokesman Eric Schippers has been cited as writing, via email, that "While we continue to believe in the merits of the case, we discussed potentially dropping the suit as a goodwill gesture and a sign of good faith that our only interest has been, and will continue to be, finding a long-term solution to help save Maryland racing."
The report cites Shippers as saying that MJC would operate better under one owner. "We are currently exploring that possibility, and believe MJC's interests may be better served by a single entity ownership structure given the complexities and dynamics of any 50/50 partnership, but it's still too speculative at this point to offer any further comment."
