The fifth race at Northlands Park on Friday night caused a few too many hearts to jump when a minor accident occurred just past the half-mile mark
.
Stelle Nel Cielo and trainer/driver Ron Graham led the way with We Winnie Winston (Don Monkman, Jr.) following in second and Outlaw Free Ride (Warren Grant) behind in third. Outlaw Free Ride made a nasty break and appeared to get caught up with We Winnie Winston in front causing interference with the rest of the field. All horses remained standing in the accident but both Outlaw Free Rider and We Winnie Winston pulled up and did not finish the race.
Unaffected during the incident, Stelle Nel Cielo, a four-year-old Astreos mare owned by Norman Kennedy of Calgary, Alta., went on to score her first win of the season in 1:56.1 with Barona Grizzly (Brent Grundy) coming in second and Sammy Lee Promise (Jean Francois Gagne) finishing third.
If further information is made available on the condition of the horses involved, Trot Insider will pass it along.
