After scoring a pillar-to-post win in last week's Preferred 3, Sylvain Descheneaux and the Gaar Racing Stables' Barockey ($6.10) used different tactics to take Saturday's (Feb. 23) featured $10,500 Preferred 2 Pace for fillies and mares at Flamboro Downs.
The 10-year-old Mach Three mare floated forward from post 2 in the field of six, yielding only to the outside pair of Robintheatm (Brett MacDonald) and Phoos Girl (Marc St. Louis) on approach to a :28.1 first quarter. Well after the field continued single file through a :58.4 half, Alfie Carroll angled Barockey first-over in front of Twenty Three Red (J Harris) to avoid traffic up the backstretch. Barockey went on to challenge Robintheatm for the lead with just over a quarter mile remaining, seize command midway on the final turn, and prove a measured winner in 1:58 over Phoos Girl, who angled out of the pocket to give late chase for second. Aint Three OK (Robert Shepherd), dispatched the 3-5 favourite, rallied mildly down the grandstand side from third-over for third.
Richard Moreau trains Barockey, who has won three of four races in February and 52 in her career.
In the sub-featured $8,500 Preferred 3 distaff, Bradley and John Powell's War Filly ($4.00) proved a wire-to-wire winner in 1:58, two lengths better than Twice An Angel. Brett MacDonald drove the seven-year-old Mach Three mare.
