Making his first start since the middle of December, Lucan Hanover came away victorious in Monday’s $30,000 Open Preferred Handicap for pacers at Dover Downs.
With Yannick Gingras at the controls, Lucan Hanover slid into an early two-hole from his Post 5 perch on the starting gate, and from there he was afforded the luxury of tracking race leader Mustang Art through fractions of :26.2, :55.3 and 1:23.
Gingras found late room for the veteran pacer and a :28.1 closing quarter was just enough to fend off a ferocious late bid by Dapper Dude, who came up a nose short in the 1:51.2 affair. Sparky Mark, another classy veteran, was a bang-up third.
Andrew Harris trains the 19-time winner for West Wins Stable of Cambridge, Ont. The six-year-old son of Western Ideal-Lauren Order is now a career winner of $818,333.
