Custard Lite Cuts The Mustard

Custard Lite ($4.10) and driver Mike Hennessy proved to be too much to handle during Century Downs’ top-class pacing race on Sunday (Feb. 2), as the duo ground down the leader on the outer tier and went on to notch a 1:58.4 win in the $8,100 contest.

Custard Lite, who is a five-year-old Custard The Dragon mare, lined up in Post 2 against five rivals and was third down to the :29.3 quarter pole.

The public’s even-money choice watched as the Rod Hennessy-driven Marlons Magic dictated terms through the opening quarter. Custard Lite tipped out into the first-over slot in the second panel and followed along in that position as Marlons Magic clicked off the middle fractions in :59.3 and 1:28.3.

Custard Lite kept pace while overland and pushed forward through the final quarter. Marlons Magic fought until the end, but didn’t have enough to hold off Custard Lite, who went on to record the first win of her 2020 season and the eighteenth of her career. My Day, who was driven by Phil Giesbrecht, raced three-wide through the stretch, but had to settle for third.

Trainer Rod Hennessy (of Falun, Alta.) co-owns Custard Lite along with Lorne Duffield (Edmonton, Alta.).

Custard Lite has now banked $228,219 in purses over the course of her 68-race career.
