Alfie Carroll put the pedal to the metal early with Delcrest Massy in Thursday’s $11,000 Preferred 2 Handicap for trotters at Flamboro Downs, and that approach paid dividends for the gelding and his army of pari-mutuel backers.
Delcrest Massy shot to the front from Post 4 and hung up an opening quarter in :28.2 while feeling parked out pressure from A Nashty Business. That foe pressed on and showed a narrow lead while racing parked past the half in :57.3, but the trip eventually took its toll on the traffic-troubled trotter.
Delcrest Massy fought back and disposed of that foe while front-stepping the field to the three-quarter pole in 1:27.4. He then used a :31.2 final frame to win by 1-1/4 lengths over E L Rock in 1:59.2. Third prize in the featured affair went to Meadowview Vicky.
Sent off as the 3-2 choice, Delcrest Massy won for the fourth time this season in five attempts. The eight-time winner, who boasts a bankroll of $85,145 for owner Keith Cassell of Smiths Falls, Ont., hangs his harness bag in the barn of trainer Victor Puddy.
