Off a pocket ride, Caviars Triumph dashed to a narrow victory in the $8,500 Preferred 3 Trot at Flamboro Downs on Sunday (Feb. 16).
Pound Sterling set the pace to a :28.2 opening quarter and slowed the tempo towards a :58.1 half while Neon Lights, the 4-5 favourite, readied an uncovered charge after the pacesetter with Veyron second over.
Ranging alongside Pound Sterling by three-quarters in 1:27.4, Neon Lights lost stride turning into the stretch, forcing Veyron to fan wide off his helmet. Caviars Triumph darted into the open stretch as the lone threat to Pound Sterling, nailing the leader by a head on the finish of a 1:58 mile. Veyron took third.
A five-year-old gelding by Triumphant Caviar, Caviars Triumph won his 13th race from 71 starts, earning $94,229. Steve Coulter conditions the $5.50 winner for owner Steve Adams. Scott Coulter sat in the sulky.
Sent the odds-on favourite, American Wiggle cleared command early and held firm to a 1:54 victory in the $8,500 Preferred 3 Pace.
Driver Brett MacDonald landed the six-year-old American Ideal gelding on the front with pylon-starter Racemup sitting the pocket through fractions of :27.3, :57 and 1:25.3. Turning into the stretch American Wiggle strode comfortably on the lead with Racemup giving chase in second and Brandon Hanover, sitting third for the mile, holding third.
Co-owned by trainer Daniel Martin with Gaston Bibeau, American Wiggle won his 18th race in 97 starts, earning $317,901. He paid $3.40 to win.
