During the winter racing season, Woodbine Mohawk Park will feature a horseperson answering a handful of fun, offbeat questions, while giving readers a unique perspective into their personality on and off the racetrack.
In this year’s first edition of "Fast Five," Woodbine Mohawk Park driver Tyler Borth shares a handful of insights into his life on and off the track.
After spending 10 years successfully competing at Ontario’s ‘B’ tracks, Borth made Woodbine Mohawk Park his home base in 2023. His 414 wins were second-most in Canada last year.
“My career has always been decent, but this is next level,” remarked Borth, reflecting on his 2023 results. “My first year [at Mohawk Park] was better than I ever thought it would be.”
What is your most memorable 2023 win?
“I would have to say I have two: Ghostly Casper in the [$300,000 Ontario Sires Stakes three-year-old colt and gelding trot] Super Final and Elodie Hanover in the Whenuwishuponastar.”
Do you have a race you dream of winning?
“Definitely the Hambletonian. I grew up training trotters and I’m always trying to just buy trotters to have in my barn, so the Hambletonian is the goal.”
Can you pick a favourite horse you’ve ever driven?
“I would say Emmetts Buddy, and lately Amigo Volo. Amigo Volo is just like a little sports car – he’s got a nice mouth on him, he’s perfect to drive and he’s also got $2.4 million in earnings.”
If you weren’t in the horse racing industry, what job do you think you would’ve pursued?
“Professional hunter. I’d have lots of land and go hunting as often as I could.”
What’s on your TV these days?
“Taken with Liam Neeson – I like those three movies. I go on Netflix and whatever Liam Neeson is in, I’ll watch it. TV-wise, I like watching anything UFC related.”
