Kelly Hoerdt pupil In High Cotton swooped the field to land in the $10,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace on Thursday night (Feb. 9) at Fraser Downs while also being one of three victories for the trainer.
Miss Itunes, the 2-5 favourite, led the field through a stiff quarter of :26.3 before slowing proceedings to a :56 half. She quickened up the backside and opened four lengths on faltering pocket-sitter Hottieonthehorizon to three-quarters in 1:24.1, where driver Dave Hudon got underway with In High Cotton. Rounding the final turn, the five-year-old Somebeachsomewhere mare gobbled ground and reeled in the tiring pacesetter to slam a head in front at the end of a 1:53.4 mile. Moosette closed from last for third and Pirate Booty finished fourth.
Hoerdt co-owns In High Cotton, a 10-time winner from 59 starts and an earner of $131,467, with Blair and Erna Corbeil. She paid $22.80 to win.
In High Cotton completed the training hat trick of Hoerdt on Thursday. His other two wins came earlier with Juju Berry (1:56.3 winning mile, $11.80 to win) and Versatility (2:00.3, $2.60).
