To say that Modern Legend blew a little bit of carbon out of his engine in his Thursday qualifier at Woodbine Racetrack might be a serious understatement considering the classy campaigner battled through cold and windy conditions to post a winning effort in 1:52.3.
James MacDonald had the David Drew-trained Modern Legend on the lead every step of the way through panels of :27.4, :56.2 and 1:24.3, and the eight-year-old son of Modern Art-Ruby Cam fought through a stiff headwind and kicked home in :28 to win by 2-3/4 lengths over Much Adoo.
The 21-time winner was a 1:56.4 qualifying winner at Woodbine one week ago in what was his first charted line since May 24, 2015. Best known for his 66-1 upset in the 2014 edition of the Canadian Pacing Derby, Modern Legend has his sights set on becoming racing’s next millionaire. He’s a little more than $30,000 away from adding that status to his already impressive resume.
Other qualifying winners from Thursday’s session were Odds On Amethyst (1:58.3), Amazing Perch (1:58.3), Southwind Gizzel (1:58.2) and Windsun Gotham (2:00.1).
