On Wednesday, December 3, the Kawartha-area horsepeople held a Texas Hold'em poker tournament and a raffle in support of horsemen Kurt Hughes.
Forty-eight wannabe poker stars, combined with the raffle tickets sold, raised $7,000 for the support of Hughes and his family.
Trainer Dave Gibson, one of the organizers, would like to thank his fellow horsemen for the generous support. Gibson would also like to thank Reg and Steve Gassien, and the hosts, Mark and Sue Winacott, for putting the event together.
A special thanks to the sponsors of the event: Kawartha Downs, Wrights Tack Shop and Tom Colpitts.
"It never ceases to amaze me how the racing community comes together to help out one of our own," said Gibson. "Thank-you everyone for your generosity."
An online fundraiser is currently in the works for Hughes. Auction organizers are requesting the support of the harness racing community to offer auction items for this initiative.
