Standardbred Canada (SC) is partnering with Equine Guelph, Ontario Racing and the Central Ontario Standardbred Association to offer three free online courses to SC members in the winter of 2023 in priority healthcare areas of lameness, respiratory and gut health.

Sponsored by SC, the Racehorse Injury/Lameness Prevention & Care course will be first off the gate in January of 2023.

The two-week online course, developed specifically for the horse racing industry, will be offered from Jan. 23 – Feb. 3, 2023 and available FREE to the first 100 SC Members that register. To register, go to TheHorsePortal.ca/SC.

Given the demanding life of an equine athlete, a racehorse is at risk of injury and lameness every day of its racing life. In this short course by Equine Guelph at TheHorsePortal.ca, you can e-learn from industry experts on how to prevent injury and manage lameness.

The Course Instructor is Dr. Melissa McKee from McKee-Pownall Equine Services. Dr. McKee’s professional interests include lameness, diagnostic imaging, MRI, VSMT and racehorse/sports medicine practice. She will answer questions and lead robust conversations in the course’s Discussion Board. Dr. McKee will be joined by Industry Ambassadors, Ruleen Lilley and Renée Kierans, who will be on-hand as peer helpers to assist students and ask questions on hot topics.

In addition to this free racing-exclusive course offer, SC and EG will provide a 15 per cent discount for e-learning via TheHorsePortal.ca on an ongoing basis in the fall and winter. This is available to members, owners, breeders, trainers, caretakers and drivers.

“Standardbred Canada recognizes Equine Guelph's initiatives in supporting and promoting horse welfare,” said Dan Gall, President and CEO of SC. “We were extremely pleased with our partnership with Equine Guelph this past year. We had a strong enrollment in the Gut Health course and hope to replicate that again with the Racehorse Injury/Lameness Prevention & Care course in January. Equine health and welfare is always a priority for our association, and through this partnership we hope to provide some of the educational opportunities and tools that members need to ensure the well-being of their horses.”

EG has been a pioneer and global leader in online education for equine professionals since its inception in 2003. TheHorsePortal.ca was launched in 2017 and became a national success, partnering with 10 English-speaking provincial equestrian federations across Canada. It is a partnership platform for the equine community, available to everyone in the equine industry. TheHorsePortal.ca has quickly grown to include youth organizations, international safety associations and horse racing partners including Standardbred Canada, Ontario Racing, Central Ontario Standardbred Association and Horse Racing Alberta.

Standardbred Canada members will be able to access their page for information on the three free courses and the 15 per cent general course discount at TheHorsePortal.ca/SC. Be sure to hold the dates and register now for these two-week racing-exclusive online courses!
