Filion Eyeing Another WEG Title

Sylvain Filion shared WEG’s driving title in 2012 with fellow sulky sitter Jody Jamieson, but it looks as though the Quebec native isn’t in a sharing mood this season.

Filion, who took home the O’Brien Award as Canada’s Driver of the Year last season, entered Friday’s card at Woodbine Racetrack just eight wins behind WEG’s current leader, Scott Zeron. That recently departed reinsman opted to join the driving colony at The Meadowlands, and barring a serious cold spell by Filion – the title should be his for the taking.

A three-win performance at the Rexdale, Ontario oval during Friday’s 11-race card helped Filion (238 wins) inch closer to Zeron (243 wins), and it helped him open up a bit more separation from Jody Jamieson who sits third in the standings with 202 victories.

Filion clicked with Quit Smoking Now (1:56.2) in Race 2 and he tacked on wins with Little Brown Mug (1:54) in Race 4 and Addison Bay (1:52.4) in Race 9 to complete the hat trick.

A career winner of 7,473 races, Filion recently surpassed $6 million in earnings in 2013 in addition to going over $80 million in his career.
