So far the faithful have been rewarded by Hopetobefirst, a 13-year-old Sagebrush gelding who collected his fifth consecutive victory when winning an $8,900 claiming pace at Flamboro Downs on Sunday (Dec. 5).
The Stacey Currie trainee entered the six-horse contest off back-to-back victories in the Seniors Pace at The Raceway at Western Fair District and another two at other Ontario fixtures; Rideau Carleton and, most recently, at Flamboro.
On Sunday, driver J Harris floated off the car with the odds-on choice and stayed put through a :28.1 quarter to a :57.3 half, where he gave his charge the cue to move. He swooped to the top past three-quarters in 1:27.1 and cruised for home with authority, widening his advantage to eight lengths in a 1:56.4 mile.
Currie owns Hopetobefirst, a winner of 58 races from 424 starts who paid $3.50 to win.
