Second Fancy Upsets Mares Open

Second Fancy may not have been fancied by the betting public but her long odds didn’t deter her from making a go of it in $13,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace Friday at Northlands Park

.

In the Friday feature, track record holder Stabilo (Kelly Hoerdt) sprung to the lead from post position four and led the field of six through early fractions of :28.1 and :57.2.

After the half, Incredible Beauty (Keith Clark) got underway from third and hooked up in a duel with the leader past three-quarters in 1:27.2.

Meanwhile, 11-1 longshot Second Fancy, who sat fifth for most of the mile, was just beginning to gear up. With Don Monkman, Jr. at the lines, Second Fancy unleashed a :29.2 final quarter to reach up on the far outside for the victory in 1:57.2 by a neck over a snowy track.

Incredible Beauty was the runner-up with Goodbadanddeugly N (Ron Graham) closing well from second-over to get third.

Second Fancy, a four-year-old Allamerican Native-Fancy Trouble mare, is owned by Don Byrne Stables 2008 Inc. and Don M JR Stables of Edmonton, Alta. The win was her sixth in 34 starts this year and lifted her earnings to $54,736. With eight lifetime wins to her credit, Second Fancy has earned $85,613.
