Pound Sterling Stuns At Flamboro

Off at odds of 34-1, Pound Sterling darted through the open stretch to win the $11,500 Preferred 2 & 3 Handicap Trot at Flamboro Downs on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Sicario claimed command past a :27.4 first quarter with Pound Sterling sitting second. Azucar raced third heading to a :57.2 half and angled first over moving to three-quarters in 1:27.1. Sicario continued to lead around the final turn but tired through the stretch as Pound Sterling lunged to the lead quicker than Azucar, who settled for second in the 1:58.1 mile. Magic Night, the odds-on favourite, closed for third.

Returning $71.80 to win, Pound Sterling won his eighth race from 30 starts this season and his ninth from 51 overall, earning $64,376. Robert Shepherd sat in the sulky for trainer Mark Winacott and owners David Kremsdorf and Jeffrey Potok.

Beachin Lindy battled for the lead in the late stages of the mile and held firm to win the $11,500 Horses and Geldings Preferred 2 Handicap Pace in 1:55.1.

Driver Robert Shepherd sent Beachin Lindy to the lead heading to a :28.1 first quarter with Racemup positioned second and Bugsy Maguire third. Keep Coming, the 7-5 favourite, tipped first over approaching a :58.2 half and ranged towards the pacesetter to take a slim lead past three-quarters in 1:27. Beachin Lindy regained ground at the inside circling the final turn and retook control through the stretch to win by a length. Keep Coming finished second with Uf Bettors Hanover, racing second over, finishing third.

A four-year-old gelding by Somebeachsomewhere, Beachin Lindy won his sixth race from 38 starts this season and his 15th from 67 overall, earning $131,519. Stephen Charlton conditions the $6.50 winner for owner Larocque Racing Stable Inc.

Sophomore Big Jim gelding Jay Eye Em kicked off cover to take the $8,500 Horses and Gelding Preferred 3 Pace in 1:54.4.

Toot Toot N took control from the pylon post with 8-5 favourite American Wiggle securing the pocket heading to a :27.3 first quarter. Jay Eye Em, positioned sixth, angled first over and advanced towards the front passing a :57.1 half. Blue Moose soon supplied cover to Jay Eye Em when flushing from third heading to three-quarters in 1:26 but stalled spinning into the stretch. Jay Eye Em angled to the centre of the track and slid past American Wiggle, who shot through the passing lane, to win by a half length. Toot Toot N faltered to third.

Owned by trainer Rachel Andrew and driver Travis Cullen, Jay Eye Em won his seventh race from 30 starts this season and his 11th from 45 overall, earning $81,941. He paid $16.90 to win.
