Despite drawing outside posts in his last three outings, the Per Henriksen pupil continued his winning ways, with his latest feat coming in a $23,000 conditioning assignment on Friday night.
Driven by Sylvain Filion, the parked out Charlie Is A Joker worked his way to the top through opening fractions of :26.4 and :56.3. He cleared to command during the third panel and was then confronted by Julians Caesar (Jody Jamieson) at the third quarter station in 1:27. However, Charlie Is A Joker rebuffed that challenger as he trotted into the stretch and drew away by three and a quarter lengths to score in 1:56.2. Maritime champion Maple Leaf Spirit (Chris Christoforou), the early leader, and Julians Caesar finished second and third, respectively.
Unraced as a two-year-old, the homebred Angus Hall-Keystone Caprice gelding has won 11 of his 13 sophomore races while never missing the board for owners Thomas and Elizabeth Rankin of St. Catharines, Ont. He has banked $65,807 to date.
The 3-5 favourite paid $3.50 to win.
