'Lightning' Strikes; Green Breaks Maiden

With a little more than a year to go before his mandatory retirement date rolls around, veteran trotter Zeus Lightning still proved he has plenty of fight left in him.

The 13-year-old son of Pegasus Spur-Graceful Action rallied to a 1:58 triumph versus claiming foes Thursday evening at Woodbine Mohawk Park, and in doing so he nabbed the 37th victory of his career.

With Trevor Henry in tow, Zeus Lightning floated off the gate and dropped into an early four-hole while Monopoly rolled along on the lead through fractions of :28.1, :58 and 1:26.3. Zeus Lightning was third at the mid-way point, and then second at the three-quarter pole. He used a :30.2 final frame to sweep to the one-length triumph over Explosive Jet.

Steve Charlton trains the stalwart for owner Larocque Racing Stb Inc of Thornhill, Ont. To date, the classy campaigner has banked $824,327.

The program also saw trainer Keelan Green pick up his first lifetime training victory following a triumph with trotter Talahasse Seelster.

Eddie Green piloted the three-year-old daughter of Muscle Mass-Tymal Timeout to the 1:57.2 win in a $17,000 conditioned event.
