Overlooked at odds of 18-1 despite posting an upset victory in the opening round, Callie Magoo ($38.40) fashioned another front-stepping score in the $12,000 final of the Alliance Claiming Series on Friday night (December 29) at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
Driven by Alfie Carroll for trainer Kyle Bossence and co-owner Brandon Bossence, Callie Magoo fired from post six to take the lead in the 1-1/16 mile series finale for $8,500 claiming trotters and posted opening panels of :28.1 and :58.1 before Riddle Me Miss confronted him at the 1:29 third quarter mark. However, Callie Magoo trotted on to victory in 2:08 while 14-year-old Weskey fanned out three-wide in pursuit turning for home but came up less than a length short of his 60th career win as he drifted out across the track down the lane. Peeling Out edged out Riddle Me Miss for third-place off a pocket trip.
Callie Magoo, who was claimed in late September by his current connections, earned his second win of the year following a third-place finish in the series last week behind round two winner Riddle Me Miss and Weskey. The eight-year-old Magoo gelding is now a seven-time career winner with earnings totalling $71,325.
In this week's $8,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 Pace, Solid Queen ($11.40) rallied off the cover of Emerald Rihanna and defeated that foe in the final strides with Scott Coulter in the bike. The seven-year-old Riverboat King mare prevailed by one length in 1:57.4 for trainer Keith Cullen and owner Dwayne Soulliere. Favourite Big Lis had taken the lead during the :28 opening quarter and carved out middle splits of :57.2 and 1:27.2 before finishing sixth.
