The two 14-year-olds in the "Free-Old" Pace, Bobjacks Angle A and Camwiser, finished first and second, respectively, at Freehold Raceway on Saturday (Dec. 28) to close their careers.
Sent the 5-1 second favourite in the field of seven, Camwiser moved to the lead and set the early tempo. Meanwhile Bobjacks Angle A, off at 2-5, parked for the first half mile. Heading around the third turn, owner-driver Steve Smith slid Bobjacks Angle A into the pocket and tracked the pacesetter. Turning for home Camwiser remained clear, but Bobjacks Angle A got by in the last sixteenth to win by a length. The pair of war horses finished five lengths clear of third-place Hello Hot Shot.
This is the 35th win in the career of Bobjacks Angle A from 284 starts. He earned more than $330,000 in his career. Camwiser concludes his career with 56 wins in 387 starts, including earnings of more than $225,000.
Following the race, the two veterans were honored with a ceremony in the winner's circle, including a carrot bouquet.
Live racing resumes at Freehold on Thursday, starting at 12:30 p.m. EST.
