Patience is a virtue, and Phoos Girl’s approach to winning her Boxing Day assignment at The Raceway at Western Fair District is living proof that it’s true.
Phoos Girl, who was one of two trailers in the $9,400 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 for pacers, got away last and held that position until the late stages of the 1-1/16 miles affair.
Woodmere Wyldstyle rolled the field through fractions of :31.1, 1:03.2 and 1:35.2 before being overtaken in the lane. Phoos Girl swept past all four of her foes for driver Marc St. Louis, and together they drew clear to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Bourbon Seelster in 2:14. Woodmere Wyldstyle was third.
Danielle St. Louis of Swartz Creek, MI owns and trains the six-year-old daughter of Badlands Hanover-Miss Poole. The victory improved the mare’s 2019 record to 7-3-4 from 25 starts while lifting her seasonal bankroll to $49,998. The 26-time winner has stashed away more than $160,000 in earnings to date.
What Can I Say was a wire-to-wire winner in the $8,500 Preferred 3 for trotters, and he did so as the longest shot on the board.
Colin Kelly sent the 14-1 shot to the top from Post 1 and together they led the field through fractions of :31.1, 1:03.2 and 1:35. A :33.3 closing panel over a track rated ‘heavy’ with a four-second variant was enough to seal the deal for the Laurie Bako pupil. She won by 1-1/4 lengths over Irish Thunder in 2:08.3. Alpha Seelster recovered from an early miscue to finish third.
Ashley Bako of Aylmer, Ont. owns the eight-year-old son of Muscle Mass-Personal Touch. The victory was the fourth of the year and the 16th to date for the career winner of close to $120,000.
