After a week away, In High Cotton picked up where she left off, winning her second straight $10,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Pace on Thursday, Dec. 19 at Fraser Downs for a mild 5-1 upset with trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt.
Leaving from post four in the field of five, Hoerdt settled In High Cotton into the fourth position on the first turn while Outlaw Spiced Rum (Rod Therres) raced to the lead through a quarter of :28.2. Ima Beach Diva (Allan Molloy) brushed from third before clearing to the lead at the halfway point in :56.2. Outlaw Spiced Rum popped to pocket up the backstretch, surging alongside the 16-1 upset-minded leader at three-quarters in 1:25 while In High Cotton marched into contention second-over.
Turning for home, Outlaw Spiced Rum put away Ima Beach Diva before In High Cotton took her shot at the top of the lane. In High Cotton rallied past Outlaw Spiced Rum, but would need to fend off Grey Sea (John Abbott), who looked to sweep the field. The mares battled to the wire, with In High Cotton reaching the line first by a half-length in 1:55 over Grey Sea. Outlaw Spiced Rum held for third.
Hoerdt co-owns the six-year-old daughter of Somebeachsomewhere-Olivette Hanover along with Blair and Erna Corbeil. In High Cotton has won nine of 34 on the year, banking $72,850 on the season and $272,217 for her career.
