The featured events on Thursday's card at Flamboro Downs were a pair of Preferred Trots, and in each of those events it was a case of the mares showing the boys that anything they could do girls could do better.
On the toteboard, the final odds for Thursday's Preferred 2 Trot at Flamboro Downs showed three horses as co-favourites at odds of around 2-1. On the track, there was one horse that absolutely showed he was the best on this night.
Scott Young felt he had the best horse with Absolut Seelster, and dared his five rivals to beat him. From post four, Absolut Seelster was pointed to the top and got there early. An opening panel of :28.4 was followed by middle splits of :58.3 and 1:28 before Absolut Seelster hit another gear turning for home. Waikiki Hanover (Marc St. Louis, Jr.) could not gain on the temposetter down the lane as Absolut Seelster hit the line in 1:57.1, two-and-a-half lengths the best. Azucar (Robert Shepherd) completed the triactor.
Ben Baillargeon trains and Tom & Elizabeth Rankin of St. Catharines, Ont. own Absolut Seelster (Angus Hall - Amazing Adventure), now a winner of nine races this season. With $76,510 banked this campaign, the five-year-old trotter boasts a bankroll of $193,247 in her career.
Lady Caterina had no trouble with her rivals in the $8,500 Preferred 3 Trot. Marc St. Louis, Jr. placed the six-year-old on the front heading into the first turn and was never threatened. After trotting out fractions of :29, :58.4 and 1:27.3, Lady Caterina pranced home in :29.1 to trip the timer in 1:56.4 more than two lengths to the good over pocket-sitting Smoke Monkey (Scott Coulter) and favoured Warrawee Shipshape (Shepherd).
In the midst of her best season, Lady Caterina (Holiday Road - The Lady Money) notched her eighth win of the year and 15th lifetime to push her lifetime bankroll to $185,511. Alan D. Fair trains for owner Elizabeth Fair of Ancaster, Ont.
