The cold didn't appear to bother Get Thereovernight, who earned his third consecutive Open victory with a wire-to-wire romp in the $11,500 feature race at Northlands Park on Saturday, Dec. 19 as temperatures dropped to -15 degrees Celsius
The 1-5 favourite was driven by Bill Tainsh Jr. and he fronted the field of six through fractions of :29, :57 and 1:25 en route to the 1:54.4 triumph. Premium Attaction and Gerry Hudon followed over one length behind in second while Who Doesnt and Travis Cullen came on for third.
Get Thereovernight has now hit the board 27 times this year from 34 starts. Saturday's score was the four-year-old Clintons Cigar gelding's 11th win and pushed his annual income to $111,261 for trainer Kelly Hoerdt and co-owners Peter Giannakopoulos and Blair Corbeil.
The Open victory was the start of a late Daily Double sweep for the Hoerdt stable, which also sent out three-year-old pacing filly Hot Time in the ninth race finale.
It was great end to the card for Hoerdt, one of the organizers of the evening's Stollery Children's Hospital fundraiser. Hoerdt's Bedrock Training Centre, Giannakopolous's Nitza's Pizza, Northlands Park and the Alberta Standardbred Horse Association teamed up to make the benefit possible. A complimentary buffet for the first 150 people was offered in the grandstand, along with several raffle draws.
