Sunshine Boy streaked to his fifth straight victory in the $10,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at Fraser Downs to headline the Friday, Dec. 1 program.
Overcoming the outside post seven for his third consecutive start, Sunshine Boy forged ahead to claim the lead after an early tussle that kept him three-wide to the quarter in :27. Once the popular pacer cleared to command, he quickly began to open up on his rivals, leading by 2-1/2 lengths at the half in :56 and widening to four lengths down the backstretch to three-quarters in 1:24.2. Despite tiring late in the sloppy conditions, no one could catch the streaking 3-5 favourite as he cruised home a one-length winner in 1:54.3 for driver Scott Knight and trainer Jim Marino.
Sunshine Boy paid $3.20 to win, with 3-1 second choice Mach Steady (John Abbott) up for second and 10-1 third choice Itll Be Fine (Kelly Hoerdt) completing the triactor after that pair tried to mix it up early on.
Sunshine Boy earned his ninth win of the season from 24 starts and now boasts 22 victories lifetime with more than $240,000 in earnings. Marino co-owns the five-year-old Sunshine Beach-Betterfrombehind gelding with J J J Stables of Prince George, B.C. and Paul Saunders of Surrey, B.C.
