Class relief proved to be key for Blue Moose on Monday evening, as the gelding rallied to an impressive victory in the $8,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
With Robert Shepherd at the lines, Blue Moose got away fourth while Hidden Potential supplied the field with first half fractions of :29.3 and 1:00.1. Shepherd had his charge on the move on the way to the half, and they showed a short lead while racing first over at the three-quarter marker in 1:29.1. A :29.4 final frame earned Blue Moose the win by 1-1/4 lengths over Colorado Buck in 1:59. Taking home third prize was Artistic Pick.
Sent off as the 2-5 favourite in the eight-horse affair, Blue Moose improved his 2019 record to 11-6-2 from 25 starts with the win. Isabelle Darveau trains the four-year-old son of Badlands Hanover-Whig Party, who recently pushed his lifetime earnings over $100,000 for owner Robert Shepherd of Flamborough, Ont.
