Shanghai Phil, one of the top three two-year-old pacing colts of 2004, will be moving from Quebec to stand at Kendal Hills Stud Farm in Campbellcroft, Ont. for the 2009 breeding season.
Shanghai Phil, a six-year-old son of Blissfull Hall out of Matter Of Style (by Matts Scooter), was the most popular pacing stud in Quebec the first two years he stood. He will be standing for a fee of $2,000 in 2009.
Shanghai Phil was a multiple Grand Circuit winner at two. He took his mark of 1:51.2 while winning the International Stallion Stakes at the Red Mile in Lexington, Kentucky. In his freshman campaign he also won the Bluegrass Stakes from Post 10 in 1:52.2, and the Champlain Stakes at Mohawk Racetrack in 1:51.4.
He finished third in the $1 million Metro Pace at Woodbine Racetrack, which was won by Rocknroll Hanover in a then-World Record 1:49.4. Shanghai Phil was clocked in 1:50 in the Metro, as he finished just one length back. Shanghai Phil got the better of Rocknroll Hanover in their Breeders Crown elimination later that year, when he posted a two and a half-length victory in 1:53.1. Shanghai Phil would go on to finish third in the $829,000 Breeders Crown final one week later. He banked $567,622 in his two-year-old season.
Offspring from Shanghai Phil’s first crop are now yearlings just starting their careers. His offspring are already getting rave reviews from trainers like Marcel Barrieau, Dustin Jones, Guy Corbeil and Marc Camirand. Shanghai Phil has demonstrated that he is upgrading mares with respect to conformation, manners and produces good sized foals.
With a fee of $2,000, the very fertile Shanghai Phil represents exceptional value for breeders looking for world-class two-year-old speed, gait, intelligence, as well as exceptional conformation.
