Garrett Rooney excelled at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Monday (Dec. 18) evening after he won half of the 10 carded races.
Rooney opened up the card with a half-length victory by Fine By Me ($3.50) in race two. The Cameron McQueen student won the fillies and mares claimer, worth a $5,000 purse, in 2:02.2. In race three, Rooney made his second winner's circle appearance with a 1-1/2 length triumph in 1:59.4 steering Better Off Single ($4) for conditioner Katie MacNeil.
Returning as victor in the sixth, Favaro Seelster ($5.60) and Rooney won by three-quarters of a length in 2:01.2 for Lindsey Kerr. In race seven, Getting Euchred ($9.30) sprinted from last to a half-length achievement in 1:59.3 for trainer Brent Belore, giving Rooney win four on the evening. Finally, in race nine, Ha Im In Control ($14.10) and Rooney upset the field of seven to win by a half-length in 2:06.1 for trainer Lorraine Molnar.
The Iona, Ont. resident crested 1,500 victories after his driving clinic on Monday, moving his career total to 1,504. Rooney sits second aboard the top drivers at Western Fair list, with 134 wins this season to date. Tyler Borth leads all drivers with 186 tallies.
