Veteran driver Walter Cheverie is scheduled to return to the racebike during Saturday’s 14-dash program at the Charlottetown Driving Park
.
Cheverie has been sidelined with a shoulder injury following a nasty racing accident on September 12th at the CDP. He's going to be teamed up with Lakota Hall, a horse he co-owns with John Thompson, in Saturday’s feature race.
He’ll take on a solid group of foes which includes morning line favourite Yankee Sun, who is riding a three-race win streak. Mchales Gravy, who starts from the rail for driver Danny MacDonald and trainer Jamie Smith, moves up the class ladder after winning his last start. Porthill Gatsby, Porthill Alf, Island Jazzystar, Pans O Silver and Olivia Hall round out the field.
Four points separate Gary Chappell and Corey MacPherson in the race for top driver in the Trot Challenge presented by Johnston's Salads and Keybrand Foods Inc. The competition is reserved for drivers in the trot division throughout the season.
Chappell is leading with 132 points while MacPherson holds second place with 128. MacPherson has a chance to take the lead if he can engineer another winning trip on Caliban Hanover. A strong performance by Chappell and Flashy Image will keep the championship in reach. The winner will be decided during the
final card of the 2009 season on Boxing Day.
Port Bluff A, who recorded his 50th lifetime win last Saturday, will take his final score after the 12th race. The 14 year-old bay gelding, owned by Janice Moase and trained and driven by Neil Bambrick, will retire from the racing ranks. He has earned more than $150,000 in his career.
