Fraser Downs' leading reinsman Jim Marino dominated Sunday afternoon's 11-dash card of harness racing with a five-win catch-driving performance.
His Sunday scores pushed his seasonal win total to a career-high 186 and earnings to $1,247,342.
Marino started his winning ways right off the bat in the opening race aboard Mmmmmh ($20) for trainer Sandra Roberts. He was back at it in the fourth race, scoring with Branding Party ($17.30) for conditioner Paul Urquhart. The resident of Surrey, B.C. later went back-to-back in the sixth and seventh races with the Gord Abbott-trained Thieving Magpie ($5.40) and Diana Davie-conditioned Delite Debettor ($5.40). He then capped off his big day with one final triumph in the 10th aboard Dontmakemebeg ($3.10) for trainer Greg Beneen.
After Marino finished his winning crusade, new driver Amber Lancaster celebrated her first career victory in the finale with the maiden-breaking Majestic Magnolia ($37.20). Lancaster sent the sophomore filly from fifth to first down the stretch, scoring by a neck in 2:01.4 over favourite Worth Watching. The victory provided trainer Erika Schmid with her first win in eight years.
In other news, Western Canada Pacing Derby champion Sharkalucchi shipped in from Alberta and lowered his lifetime mark to 1:55.1 in a conditioning race on the card for trainer-driver Keith Clark.
