A week after she was narrowly upended by Significance, Denis St. Pierre's Tilikum ($22.30) found her way back to the winner's enclosure in Wednesday night's (Dec. 11) featured $10,500 Preferred 2 Pace for fillies and mares at Flamboro Downs.
The seven-year-old Jeremes Jet mare and driver Tyler Moore pushed through at the pegs to protect the lead on the first turn, forcing I Wish You Well (Alfie Carroll) into the pocket through a :27.3 first quarter before rating middle splits of :57.3 and 1:26.3 while uncontested. On the final turn, I Wish You Well emerged from the pocket, odds-on favourite Buttermilk Hanover (Robert Shepherd) uncorked a wide rally form the back of the pack, and Sudden Passing (Brett MacDonald) found a lane up the open stretch to give chase. Tilikum held her ground successfully, keeping I Wish You Well three-quarters of a length at bay to win in 1:55.4. Buttermilk Hanover narrowly reached third over Sudden Passing.
Tiffanee Staley trains Tilikum, now a 27-time winner.
In the sub-featured $8,500 Preferred 3 for distaff pacers, Tables Big Secret ($4.40) scored in pillar-to-post fashion as well, drawing away from Southwind Ion for a five-length, 1:55.2 score. Trainer Lyle MacArthur drove the four-year-old Big Jim mare for Linda Wellwood and Tammy Aspden.
