Sweet Molly capitalized on a perfect trip to capture the $4,450 Fillies and Mares Winners Over Pace on Thursday, Nov. 6 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Brodie MacPhee engineered the winning pocket ride for trainer David Dowling, keeping the mare in the two-hole while get Answers (Marc Campbell) provided the fractions of :28, :58.2, and 1:28.2. MacPhee angled Sweet Molly ($12.60) out on the final turn, and she nailed Get Answers on the line by a neck in 1:57.3 over a good track rated three seconds slow. Three-year-old sensation Badgirl Bridgette (Jason Hughes) rallied for third after sitting last in the field of five.
Clair Murphy of Millvale, P.E.I. co-owns Sweet Molly with Dowling of Stratford, P.E.I., Cindy MacLean of Charlottetown, P.E.I., and Derrill Murphy of Lethbridge, Alta. The four-year-old daughter of Sweet Lou-Cheyenne Molly is now 11-for-66 lifetime with $152,435 in earnings.
Earlier on the card, the $4,000 Open Trot was all Fight Song ($2.10) as the Ashley Gamester trainee and driver Hughes set the table with splits of :29.4, 1:00.1, and 1:31 and cleared off by six lengths in 2:01.2 for owner Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge, P.E.I. Whole Nother (Colin Sheppard) finished second, followed by Hallofaride (Ryan Desroche).
Fight Song, a six-year-old gelded son of Kadabra-Fortunes Of Fables, scored his 31st lifetime win in 126 starts and raised his earnings to $245,361.
The night opened with Moon Bound ($3.30) and driver Ken Murphy winning from the front-end in 2:02 for trainer Jennifer Doyle. Murphy and Doyle then reunited to win with Lady Devine ($11.30) in 1:58.3 in the eighth race. Murphy also scored with Camco Laraido ($6.60) in the third race for trainer Mario Macri as part of a driving triple.
