Battle Back On For Summerside Titles

Published: November 7, 2014 08:00 pm EST

The 2014 racing season at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway will wrap up Sunday afternoon following a weather cancellation last weekend and Marc Campbell will attempt to defend his title as Prince County’s leading driver, but he will have to make up some ground on Jason ‘Blue Knight’ Hughes.

Hughes holds a one-win lead over Campbell, 44-43, entering the Sunday afternoon program in Summerside. Campbell has 14 drives on the day, while Hughes has 13 mounts.

Hughes is in the midst of a career year as the Stratford, P.E.I. horseman is tied for most driving wins (102) at Red Shores Charlottetown with Campbell and also leads all trainers at the Summerside Raceway by one win with a 19–18 advantage over Thane Mann. Hughes also holds a sizeable 11-race advantage in the Charlottetown trainer’s standings over Jackie Matheson, at 63 wins to 52, respectively.

The $2,300 afternoon feature is scheduled as race 14 with Astor favoured for trainer/driver Hughes and owner Foxyhall Racing of Wallace, N.S. The Camluck five-year-old has post six and was a runner-up to stablemate Narragansett in his latest outing. Narragansett has post five in the seven-horse field with Gary Chappell in the bike, while another big threat comes from post seven starter All Turain and driver Mike Stevenson. The field also includes Carnivore (Kenny Arsenault), Machinthesand (Ken Murphy), Rash B Havior (Campbell) and Shock The Rock (Corey MacPherson).

The $1,100 trot class will be held as race three with Money Show favoured from post six for driver Brian Andrew, trainer Ron Gass and owners Blake Andrew of Montreal, Que. and Bill Andrew of Calgary, Alta. Other top entries include My Daisy Duke (MacPherson) and Sandhill Angel (Arsenault).

First race post time is 1 p.m. for the 15-dash card.
