Just in time for Remembrance Week, The Raceway at the Western Fair District was honoured to host a special race this past Friday evening (November 4) for Mary Warnock, a World War II veteran who served in the Airforce from the time she was 17.

Warnock, 91, always wished to attend the Kentucky Derby, and thanks to Parkwood Hospital and her family, The Raceway was able to give her the next best thing: the Mary Kentucky Derby Pace.

The evening's fourth race was named in honour of Warnock, who joined in the winner's circle celebrations with the victorious Victor Puddy-trained pacing filly Lilys Penelope and driver Alfie Carroll. The Big Jim filly held off Evas Best Girl by three-quarters of a length to win in 1:58.3 for Carroll and co-owners Keith Cassell, Dr. John Tobin, and Limco Inc.
