Green Day, the second of three winners on the 10-race card for driver Corey Callahan, showed his class turning back eight rivals in 1:54.2 to win the $21,000 Open Handicap Trot on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at Dover Downs.
Callahan took the lead on the backstretch with Green Day and the nine-year-old rolled away to his fourth victory of the season and 42nd lifetime. The Enjoy Lavec-Sonoma Hanover gelding, trained by Leigh Raymer for Mary Elizabeth Raymer, now has a career bankroll of $1,281,383 with $60,556 earned this year. Cash On Delivery came on for Vince Copeland to finish second with Can Do and Vic Kirby third.
Two races early, Callahan took race favourite Musclelaneous right to the front and never was headed in a 1:55.2 triumph in the secondary feature, a $15,000 3,4&5-Year-Old Trot. Nick Callahan trains the five-year-old son of Muscles Yankee-Splendthrift, who notched his fifth win of the season. He has won $37,578 this year for owners Bonuccelli Racing and the Callahans.
Up Front Ben marked up his ninth win of the year in 10 races with a 1:56.1 effort in a $15,000-$20,000 Claiming Allowance Handicap Trot. Tony Morgan steered the Andover Hall-Sounds Swell nine-year-old, who is conditioned by Eric Ell for Ken Wood, Bill Dittmar and Steve Iaquinta. The veteran has earned $57,250 this campaign and $389,588 lifetime.
In addition to Callahan’s triple, Allan Davis and Daryl Bier had driving doubles.
