Glen Hardy’s 10-year-old trotter Kelkatraz stole the spotlight on Friday night at Western Fair Raceway after a judge’s placing pushed winner Fa Mulan back to eighth in the featured $10,000 Preferred 2 Trot
.
Kelkatraz, the 5-1 fourth choice, used the inside starting post to his advantage and fired off an opening quarter in :29.2 with Hardy in the bike. After getting away sixth in the early going, Fa Mulan (Terry Kerr) launched a first-over bid and began to work his way to the top past the half in 1:00.4 and three-quarters in 1:30.4. The 2-1 second choice matched strides with Kelkatraz heading into the stretch and edged out his rival at the wire, however an early pylon violation resulted in his disqualification. Fa Mulan did travel inside three consecutive pylons in the first turn and as a result Kelkatraz inherited the victory in 2:01.1 with Sno N Again (Trevor Henry) rallying from second-over for the next spot and Classic Lavec (Brad Forward) getting up for third.
The victory was Kelkatraz’s fifth in 27 starts this year and pushed his earnings to $32,379. The Armbro Kelvin-Stra Katz Rosanne gelding has won 32 times over the course of a decade earning $235,565.
